GEORGE TOWN, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Penang Umno served the writ of summons on Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today in connection with the RM30 million defamation suit filed against the latter at the Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday.
The document was received by a staff at the chief minister's office, according to the plaintiff's lawyer Abdul Rauf Abdul Samad from Jahaberdeen & Co.
"We wanted to serve it on Lim personally but he sent a representative instead," he told reporters.
Penang Umno liaison chairman Zainal Abidin Osman, 51, filed the suit his personal capacity, naming Lim, 51, as well as the owners and publishers of online news portal Keadilan Daily and Suara Keadilan Daily, namely Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Segmen Fleksibel Sdn Bhd respectively, and chief editor Fazallah Pit as defendants.
Zainal Abidin claimed that Lim had emailed a press statement to Keadilan Daily which they published the same day and which later appeared on July 5 in Suara Keadilan.
Lim's statement had implied he was behind attempts to overthrow the Penang chief minister and also the street demonstrations in Komtar and Penang Bridge on July 1, he claimed.
Abdul Rauf said the court has fixed Nov 18 to hear the case. -BERNAMA
